TBI began working in the Sahel in 2018 with its first country project opening in Burkina Faso in 2019. The wider Sahel work focuses on working together with the Sahel Alliance and individual country governments supporting the areas of governance and reform which are crucial building blocks for the region to find solutions to its multifaceted challenges

Job description

The Project Associate  is a one-year fixed-term contract to support the Sahel Strategy team.  The role will focus on project management, briefing and analysis alongside the management of logistical and security tasks to support meetings and activities. This role would be ideal for a graduate with some workplace experience (aprox. 2-4 years) seeking to advance their career in the field of international affairs or international diplomacy. The Sahel Lead will make every effort to match the requirements of the job with the individual’s qualifications and interests.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Drive forward and coordinate deliverables against work plan for agreed pieces of work for government

Planning and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

  • Support strategic thinking by being a sounding board for options and ideas the Sahel Lead is considering and applying a logical and informative approach to thinking through issues, problems and opportunities
  • Carry out MEL Lead duties, using impact tools to log activity and impact from the Sahel programme

Briefing and analysis

  • Conduct research into the current response and measures being taken by governments in the Sahel and the prevailing political, social and security conditions in the Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad). Responsible for conducting regular economic and geo-political assessments of the situation in the region and countrywide. Gather information and producing briefings as necessary.
  • Prepare draft briefs, proposals (for government and for fundraising), media articles and presentations, and provide draft feedback on government documents as required
  • Undertake data collection, information-checking and analysis
  • French-English translation tasks where necessary
  • Accompany Sahel-led to meetings (and travel when required), take notes and summarise in short reports

 Operational running of the programme:

  • Responsible for the Sahel team’s schedule and travels, including liaising with travel agency to book flights, hotels and travel, organising visas, and supporting security planning.
    Support with the preparation of trips by Mr Blair to the region, supplying information needed by his private office who coordinate his trips.
  • Actively follow security developments in the region, and carry out security/operations lead duties required in country and support all security tasks required by the Africa Security lead. Including but not limited to, Security plan and SOP completion, travel risk assessments, incident reporting and tracking
  • Organise and manage the Sahel team meetings and Mission events, prepare written summaries and conduct follow-up activities, as appropriate;
  • Support project finance management including responsibility for tracking and recording expenditure against budget, petty cash management, maintaining the payment tracker and submitting cash requests, and supporting the Sahel Lead with the review of management accounts.
  • As necessary liaise with London-based finance, legal, people and operations teams to ensure the smooth running and, if relevant, expansion of the Sahel programme

Job requirements

This is a role in a fast-paced working environment, based in Dakar and reporting to the Sahel Lead. The successful candidate for the role should be able to display the majority of the following:

  • Language skills: fluent spoken and written English and French;
  • Excellent information technology skills, including word-processing, database applications, presentation software and Internet;
  • University degree, or equivalent, in a related field of expertise,
  • Demonstrable workplace experience (aprox. 2-4 years)
  • Evidence of ability to think strategically; to express ideas clearly; to work independently and in teams; to demonstrate a sense of self-assuredness combined with political understanding and knowledge of current affairs;
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills – the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently, and prioritise effectively. Readiness to adapt to last-minute changes and tight deadlines, showing high flexibility and calm as priorities change, and support areas are revised according to needs
  • A team player who has excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A strong commitment to development; an interest in adapting to varied physical and professional environments; and a desire to work with people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of working with government (desirable not essential)
  • A masters degree in a relevant discipline (desirable not essential)
