Save the Children is hiring a West and Central Africa Regional Advocacy Director – (210008A3)
As a member of the West & Central Africa (WCA) Senior Leadership team, the Campaigns, Communication, and Advocacy (ACCM) Director will have shared accountability for Save the Children’s international development and emergency programming in the region of approximately $248 million (2021) through an region employing around 2,500 people. The ACCM Director will take shared responsibility for the delivery of Save the Children’s 2030 ambition and strategy. He/she will be the public face of Advocacy Campaign efforts and drives excellence in Media and Communications regarding our policy and advocacy plans. He/she will represents Save the Children at a senior level to key regional stakeholders.
The ACCM Director provides overall leadership, strategic direction and management to the campaigns and advocacy work of Save the Children across the West and Central Africa region. While the majority of the Campaign and advocacy activities are delivered nationally in the nine countries to be specifically supported (Nigeria, DR Congo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia), regional opportunities exist to advocate for child rights with regional bodies, requiring close cooordination with the Regional Programming Unit (RPU), East and Southern Africa (ESA) Region and the AU Pan Africa Advocacy Office.
He/she coordinates with global advocacy, campaigns, communication and media efforts and manages the regional advocacy, campaign, communication and media team to ensure the high-quality delivery of Save the Children’s efforts to influence and bring about change in the awareness, attitudes, behaviours and policies related to the rights of children in WCA. The focus is on ensuring child rights are upheld and to contribute to the positioning of Save the Children as a leading child-focused campaign and advocacy organisation.
His/ Her first responsibility will be to undertake advocacy, campaigns, communication and media work to advance Save the Children’s policy positions and influence decision-makers, at the national, regional and global levels. He/ she will support countries to shape and ensure the delivery of high quality outcomes for children including ensuring operational planning and resources are in place.
He/she is also responsible for creating an enabling internal environment for campaigning and advocacy by leveraging resources, building partnerships, strengthening capacity and capability of Country Offices and engaging with Save the Children Members. He/she supports the development and delivery of strong national advocacy and campaign plans backed by media and communication strategies. He/she ensures effective risk mitigation and safeguarding when we speak out boldly for children
Qualifications and experiences
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field
- More than 10 years’ experience in a senior management role
- Strong background in advocacy leadership at a senior level, including policy development and the ability to link programmes with advocacy work.
- Experience in engaging the public in campaigns, including the ability to identify “campaign able” objectives within the policy goals, and to plan and evaluate campaign activities
- Experience in leading the creation and implementation of a strategy, demonstrating the ability to identify the necessary steps towards an ambitious goal.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French and English to motivate influence and negotiate both internally and externally.
- Sound understanding of the major economic, social development and poverty issues in Africa.
- Experience of building, leading and developing colleagues and staff with different backgrounds and expertise.
- Cultural sensitivity, with highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching.
- Experience of working within a complex and matrix organisation structure.
- Experience of building personal networks at senior levels.
- Commitment to Save the Children values.
- Experience of travel, and a willingness to travel in a broad range of African countries and more widely, sometimes at short notice
Contract length: 2 Years
Location: Dakar, Senegal with up to 50% travel.
